When my ten year old Golden Retriever, Honey, got sick, we researched which foods are best for dogs. Due to her health we began feeding her natural homemade dog food which we now feed to our other dogs too. I recommend it. It's very simple to make, with few ingredients and you can make it ahead for several days. Enjoy!
5 cups Water
2 cups Brown Rice (I prefer brown rice over oats)
1 pound lean meat (turkey, chicken or beef ground or diced)
1 cup diced sweet potatoes (1-2 sweet potatoes, don't have to be peeled)
1 cup green beans
1 apple (peeled and diced, do not use the core)
1 tsp olive oil
Extra supplements and nutrients
*I don't use all these ingredients but they are beneficial. These can be purchased at any health food store.*
1 Tbs apple cider vinegar
1 Tbs raw wheat germ
1 Tbs ground kelp
1 Tbs brewer's yeast
1 tsp ground bone meal (can be ground eggshells in coffee grinder)
1 tsp salmon oil (I just use the olive oil as I cook)
In a 3 quart saucepan, bring all ingredients except meat to a boil. Add meat, reduce heat to low and stir. Simmer stirring often for approximately 5-10 minutes. Set aside and let cool to room temperature. Makes 8 cups.
We feed our 15 pound dogs approximately 1-1 1/2 cups per day. You can pack servings in individual Ziplocs and keep in refrigerator if using within a week. If not, freeze.
Always feed at room temperature, you can put in a bowl and microwave for about 15-20 seconds or carefully place Ziploc in boiling water for a few seconds just to remove the cold before feeding.

Blueberry Coffee Cake
For the cake
Nonstick cooking spray
9 ounces cake flour, approximately 2 cups
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
2 ounces unsalted butter, room temperature
5 1/4 ounces sugar, approximately 3/4 cup
1 large egg
1/2 cup whole milk
15 ounces fresh whole blueberries, approximately 3 cups
For the topping
3 1/2 ounces sugar, approximately 1/2 cup
1 1/2 ounces cake flour, approximately 1/3 cup
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg
2 ounces unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
For the cake
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F.
Spray a 9 by 9-inch glass baking dish with nonstick spray and set aside.
In a medium mixing bowl whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt and ground ginger. Set aside.
In the bowl of a stand mixer, with the paddle attachment, beat together the butter and sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, approximately 1 minute. Add the egg and beat until well incorporated, approximately 30 seconds. Add 1/3 of the flour mixture and beat on low speed just until incorporated and then add 1/3 of the milk and beat until incorporated. Repeat, alternating flour and milk until everything has combined. Gently stir in the blueberries and pour the mixture into the prepared baking dish.
For the topping
In a small bowl combine the sugar, flour and nutmeg. Add the butter and work into the dry ingredients using a fork to combine. Continue until the mixture has a crumb-like texture. Sprinkle the mixture on top of the cake. Bake on the middle rack of the oven for 35 minutes or until golden in color. Cool for at least 10 minutes before serving.
